Hello! My name is Dean Cliff and I began the Web Development
program at
Des
Moines Area Community College in the Spring semester 2022. Before DMACC, I studied a self-paced online Udemy course
on
web development in July 2021. I enjoyed it and was fascinated so much by it that I decided to switch to pursuing a
Web Development AAS Degree. I am very studious, detail-oriented, determined and self-motivated; I believe these
skills align well with my goal of becoming a high-achieving Web Developer. I am naturally curious and have a
love for learning new things and developing new skills.
I grew up in Galesburg Illinois, attended Galesburg High School, and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Knox College. I majored in Educational Studies and Classics-Latin and earned a K-12 teaching certificate to teach Latin. I was involved in a variety of clubs and activities while at Knox such as the Educational Studies club, Latin club and the Knox-Sandburg Community Concert Band.
Presently, I work for Hy-Vee, Inc. and have since May 2002. I have held a variety of positions in my time at Hy-Vee, most recently Assistant Manager, Manager Health, Wellness, & Home and my current position of Customer Care Supervisor.
As Customer Care Supervisor, I am responsible for creating, encouraging, promoting, and maintaining an atmosphere of service, friendliness and fun through flexibility, teamwork and employee engagement. I coach and motivate others, evaluate performance both formally and informally, and respond to and address the needs of customers, employees, vendors, and store locations. I utilize sound conflict resolution and communication skills to resolve problems and issues quickly, efficiently, and in a timely, professional manner. I plan, assign, and review the work of others and I compile various reports and logs of weekly, monthly, and quarterly statistics for department and company use.
My hobbies include singing, biking, hiking, reading, spending time with my cat and traveling but one of my biggest hobbies is studying Spanish. I began studying Spanish several years ago. I took the beginning and intermediate Spanish courses offered at DMACC, travelled to Heredia and Monteverde, Costa Rica to study language and culture at a Spanish immersion school called Centro Panamericano de Idiomas (CPI). Traveling and studying abroad was an amazing, enlightening, educational experience. Currently, I study Spanish virtually with a tutor from Venezuela. I have a passion for languages, plan to continue to study and have the goal of being fluent someday.
